A Christmas gift from publisher Emil Hertzka to Arnold Schönberg, 1913
Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna
I do not know which of Mahler’s symphonies has the greatest significance, and I consider it unnecessary to say which of them is dearest to me. However, if the question were put to me which piece I would wish to set aside if all except one were to burn, then I would reply: burn them all, or none of them, but save Specht’s Mahler biography. Because his spirit will endure.
Arnold Schönberg
