Away with the Jews!
External letters, Mattsee, 21 June, in
Neue Warte am Inn 41/25 (25 June 1921), p. 4
Austrian National Library, Vienna
An insider leaked a situation report to the Neue Warte am Inn weekly newspaper published in Braunau on 21 June, which was printed in that paper’s 25 June issue. That “medium of advocacy of the peasantry and industry” had been a platform for years for disseminating German National slogans, extoling “useful antisemitism” as an effective tool for expelling Jews. This report appeared five days prior to more mentions in Viennese and Prague newspapers.
(Away with the Jews!) In 1920, Mattsee successfully kept the seasonal location free from Jews, and the summer guests were very thankful – and it should be the same this year. However, the Jew [Heinrich] Schönberg, the husband married in a civil ceremony to Miss Berta Ott, unexpectedly succeeded in lodging a dozen Hebrews in Mattsee. Therefore, last Sunday the local council unanimously resolved a protest rally against admitting Jews, thus warding off defilement of good Mattsee, the Jew-free seasonal location. One should not think that Christians would condescend to remove the Redeemer’s image from their dwellings in order to grant lodgings to Jews. If the local council’s protest is effective, a course of action will be expected from the affronted populace.
